Shortly before the Covid-19 outbreak, at the beginning of 2020, Medical Hire were pleased to be asked to support a cancer storyline down on the farm at Emmerdale.
In hard-hitting scenes, character Vanessa discovered her devastating bowel cancer diagnosis whilst being held hostage by the evil Pierce. Despite Vanessa’s desperate objections, Pierce opened her letter from the hospital, revealing the heart-breaking news, and at the same time taunting her with the story of his own father’s cancer battle which resulted in him passing away.
Finally free from Pierce’s evil clutches, Vanessa underwent major surgery to remove the cancerous tumour from her bowel. But although the operation was a success, the doctors advised her that she would still need to undergo a course of chemotherapy to make sure all traces of the cancer were cleared.
Helping to set the scene for Vanessa’s ongoing treatment, the Medical Hire team supplied a range of specialist equipment to create the chemotherapy ward. Several chemotherapy manual recliner chairs were provided along with accompanying adjustable overbed tables. Drip-stands, drips and syringe drivers were also provided and positioned alongside each chair. A range of fixtures and fittings added finer details to the set including a monitor, stainless steel trolleys, and sharps bin. And finally, a range of consumables added the finishing touches, including chemotherapy transportation bags, needles, dressings, latex gloves, antibacterial wipes, and more.
The scenes were aired on Emmerdale on ITV during the first national lockdown and Vanessa’s storyline continued until later in the year.
