This latest medical storyline, which started back in March, features character David Metcalf, who is concerned that his father Eric Pollard may have prostate cancer after a period of feeling unwell. David naturally encourages Eric to make an appointment with the doctor, but Eric only agrees on the condition that David gets checked out too.
David has no reason to be concerned for himself and believes he is wasting the doctor’s time by attending his own appointment, so is completely stunned when the doctor finds a lump. David is referred to the hospital for an ultra-sound scan and is later diagnosed with an aggressive form of testicular cancer.
Over the following weeks, David undergoes a life-saving operation followed by a course of chemotherapy during which he starts to lose his hair.
Medical Hire were thrilled to be involved in the whole storyline so far, providing professional advice and equipment at every stage. The team provided an ultrasound machine for David’s scan, hospital beds and theatre equipment for the operation, and specialist chemotherapy chairs for the ongoing treatment.
Chloe Mitchell, Director for Medical Hire, said, “We are very privileged to have worked with the cast of Emmerdale for a long time now and to be able to help make the dramatic storylines come to life. Being involved in the testicular cancer storyline was a particular honour as it such an important issue in everyday life. By helping the Emmerdale team to portray the scenario as realistically as possible, we have helped to raise awareness and shown our support to the ‘Check Your Chaps’ campaign.”
The storyline is thought to continue later in the year and into 2017.
