Vacutainer plastic tubes offer a safe method of blood collection and reduce the potential for tube breakage and specimen spillage, thereby reducing the potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens. An effective way to collect blood and help reduce the possibility of accidental needlesticks.
Vacutainer tubes are colour-coded to indicate the type of anticoagulant used. The most common colours are red, green, and blue. Red vacutainer tubes contain EDTA and are used for most routine blood tests. Green vacutainer tubes contain heparin and are used for tests that require a very small blood sample. Blue vacutainer tubes contain sodium citrate and are used for tests that require a larger blood sample.
