The first series of Kay Mellor’s brand-new drama, Girlfriends, concluded on ITV this week after six episodes following the lives of three childhood friends.
The series sees the three friends rekindle their friendship after the sudden, yet mysterious, death of Linda’s husband, and follows each of them as they face their own challenges including divorce, age discrimination and the demands of their families.
Medical Hire were thrilled to have provided hospital equipment and medical advice for episode 5 of the series, following on from the team’s involvement in Kay Mellor’s ‘In the Club’ and ‘The Syndicate.
Preparing for and filming the different medical-related elements of the episode involved a wide variety of specialist equipment, script advice and support from Medical Hire.
The first part of the episode saw character Linda accidentally taking an overdose. She is rushed to hospital and into A&E where she is treated and later regains consciousness.
The second part of the episode involves character John being rushed into A&E having suffered a suspected heart attack. He is initially taken to A&E but is later moved to the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
For filming these scenes, the Girlfriends production team took over a large area of Chapel Allerton Hospital and created a 16-bed A&E department. Medical Hire assisted the team in creating this large-scale department and provided a wide range of A&E equipment.
In preparation for the filming of the scenes with character John, Medical Hire provided specialist HDU equipment and ensured that all machines and monitors were configured correctly to represent a real-life scenario.
In addition to support for the A&E and HDU sets, Medical Hire also supplied equipment for a general hospital ward and waiting area.
In advance of filming the series, Medical Hire offered script advice to the Girlfriends production team, guiding them on the type of equipment and medical props required to ensure the storylines were true-to-life. Medical Hire’s team of advisors were also on-set to support the cast and crew during filming, which included providing specialist advice on Rhesus.
