Continuing the long-running storyline of Sarah Sugden’s heart condition, last week’s Emmerdale featured the long-anticipated moment where doctors revealed that a heart donor had been found and Sarah’s transplant could finally go ahead.
After receiving the devastating news that Sarah was suffering from heart failure back in July, Sarah and her mum Debbie Dingle had been nervously waiting and praying that a donor would quickly be found. The life-changing news that a heart was available was met with hugely mixed emotions, but the transplant procedure had to immediately get underway.
Medical Hire were privileged to have been involved in this emotional storyline from the very beginning, providing specialist advice and support for the scriptwriters prior to filming, and support for the cast crew on set during production.
The Medical Hire team consulted with heart transplant experts at Newcastle Hospital, and sought advice from paediatric cardiac advisors and paediatric ICU advisors to ensure that Sarah’s treatment was portrayed as accurately as possible.
As well as providing specialist advice and support, Medical Hire also supplied a vast array of ICU equipment to dress the set and for the cast to use during filming. The team supplied a dialysis machine, respiratory equipment, a vital signs monitor, drips and syringe drivers, plus a host of accessories. The team also supplied an external pace maker that Sarah would need during her transplant and recovery.
The storyline continues on Emmerdale on ITV as Sarah battles to recover from her major surgery.
